How to Jump Start a Car (And Use a Jump Starter Properly)

How to Jump Start Your Car with a Jump Starter:

1. Check charge: Make sure your jump starter has at least 30% battery.
2. Plug in leads: Connect the jumper cables to the jump starter’s output port (usually beside the LED light).
3. Attach clamps correctly:
   • Red clamp → Positive (+) terminal on your car battery
   • Black clamp → Negative (–) terminal
4. Wait for the green light: This means it’s safe to start the engine.
5. Start your car: Once running, remove the clamps and keep your engine idling for a few minutes.

Option 2: Jump Start Using Another Car

How to Jump Start Using Another Vehicle:

1. Line up the vehicles close enough so jumper leads can reach — but not touching.
2. Turn off both engines and pop the bonnets.
3. Attach jumper leads in this exact order:
   • Red → Positive terminal on the flat battery
   • Red → Positive terminal on the good battery
   • Black → Negative terminal on the good battery
   • Black → A clean, unpainted metal bolt on the engine block or chassis of the flat car (not the battery!)
4. Start the donor car and let it run for a few minutes.
5. Start your car. If it turns over — awesome.
6. Remove the leads in reverse order, carefully avoiding contact between clamps.

 If your car doesn’t start, it could be due to:

• Bad leads (too thin or worn)
• A battery that’s beyond saving
• Something else like a faulty alternator
