What Is a Dual Battery System?

A dual battery system is exactly what it sounds like—your vehicle has a second battery (an auxiliary battery) installed alongside the main starter battery. This second battery powers all your camping or 4WD accessories like fridges, lights, radios, or pumps, without touching your main battery.

That means when you’re camping overnight, you can still start your vehicle the next morning. No more worrying about waking up to a flat battery.

How Does It Work?

The two batteries are connected using a system of wiring and an isolator device—either manual or automatic (often a Voltage-Sensitive Relay, or VSR). The key function of this isolator is to separate the two batteries, so you never draw from the starter battery when the engine is off.

  • When your engine is running, your alternator charges both batteries.
  • When the engine is off, the isolator prevents your accessories from draining the main battery, drawing power instead from the auxiliary battery.

What Type of Battery Should I Use as the Second (Auxiliary) Battery?

Your main starter battery will usually stay as is. For your second battery, here are the most common options:

  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) – Great all-rounder. Tough, reliable, and made for deep discharges. A popular choice.
  • Lithium – Lightweight, fast charging, and long-lasting—but more expensive upfront.
  • Flooded Lead-Acid – Cheaper, but needs maintenance and isn’t ideal for repeated deep cycling.

How to Wire a Dual Battery System (Basic Setup)

Here’s a simple step-by-step overview. For most campers and tradies, we recommend using a VSR (voltage-sensitive relay) as it automates the switching between batteries.

What You’ll Need:

  • Starter battery (your existing vehicle battery)
  • Auxiliary battery (AGM is great)
  • Battery tray or box for the second battery
  • VSR or isolator
  • Battery cables and fuses
  • Crimp connectors, terminals, heat shrink

Wiring Steps:

  1. Mount your second battery securely in a battery tray (rear tub, canopy, or under bonnet if room allows).
  2. Install the VSR near the starter battery. This will control when the batteries are connected/disconnected.
  3. Run the main cable (usually 8-10mm²) from the starter battery positive terminal to the VSR input.
  4. Connect a fused cable from the VSR output to the auxiliary battery’s positive terminal.
  5. Earth both batteries securely to a bare metal section of your vehicle chassis or engine block.
  6. Add inline fuses close to both battery terminals for protection.
  7. Test the system: the VSR should connect the two batteries once your vehicle voltage rises above 13.3V (when charging), and disconnect when it drops below ~12.7V.

TIP: If you’re running sensitive gear like a fridge, consider installing a fuse box or DC distribution panel off the auxiliary battery to keep wiring tidy and safe.
